Why did Ram asked Sita for 'AgniPariksha'? Is Ram male chauvinist!

Ram, the supreme God avatar who is considered flawless, and beyond praises which can be expressed in words.
Why did such a Ideal person asked his wife Sita to perform a test for her purity, when she was kidnapped by Ravana (The Evil).

Sita did not went to Ravana out of choice, she was forcibly taken. So Ravana was to be punished, and he aptly was. but for what reasons did Ram asked her to perform this 'AgniPariksha' test?

Even though Sita passed the test, she was later exiled from His kingdom 'Ramrajya', because people of His kingdom did not beleived in Sita's purity. Ram instead of fighting with ill-opinioned people he exiled Sita for none of her faults.

    I second your views .
The Vedas from which all Hindu scripts draw their source clearly say that God is never Born , he never dies and does not incarnate.
If you see Ram as a human being you'll be fine .

  • I think Ram did what a King should do as per the Hindu Dharma. Probably he wanted to set some good example for the future generations to come. He conveyed this message somehow that for a king, his people's opinion is important & sometimes more important than his personal views. Well, may be there were some laws like that at that time.. can't say exactly.

As for Urmila, i sure have some doubts about it. i mean when Sita came for banvaas, urmila could have decided as well to accompany Laxman. Again, i think she choose it herself... to be in the Raj-mahal.

  • If a person can’t stand by his wife when he needs him most .. how do u trust him to stand by his subjects??? You can’t break one promise to fulfill another / shrug off one responsibility to stand by another… human or god….

Shankar, as a king he is supposed to treat everyone with the same measure.. hence he should treat his wife as fairly as he would treated his subjects.. and I don’t think any religion preaches punishment (for what) even if found innocent ..

  • Laxman said no to Urmila, when she begged Laxman to take her with him, argument was he may not be able to serve Ram.

King dharma and bhai prem ka palan karne ke liye, doing injustice to wife was little bit too much.

What was the need to get marry, I dont understand.

  • Ok first of all how can we separate the king and the husband. Unfortunately both are the same people and he was unfair to his wife and tried to project a ideal picture infront of his people. And unfortunately that became the ideology of Indians persay. We always try to live for others, we never care for what we want and end up being unfair to our loved ones and ourselves.

  • "What was the need to get marry, I dont understand" - because Laxman at the time didnt know that he will go for Vanvaas!!
You actually gave the right answer:: argument was he may not be able to serve Ram....and in my opinion, the person (brother, parents) with whom you have spent 20 years of life comes more important to you than a person (wife etc.) 2 months old.

  • Infact Shankar has said the 'ideal' thing... though it is a different point that neither you nor I can understand this 'dharma-karma' thing because what we are discussing is SATYUG while sitting in KALYUG! :) Think abt it!

  • nice and healthy discussion ! i love such a thing ;) and some more points here..

surely this thing not only indicates Ram being a male chauvinist, but also indicates his possessiveness about his wife.. aint it! he went to war with the great and almighty to take her out.. and fulfilled her wish of getting "swarna mrig" he went all the way to hunt it down..

now coming up with rationale.. Ram is considered to be a dharma avtar (or something on those lines) who was here to establish the ideal method of living.. now doesnt that explains what a person should do as a husband (follow her whims and fancies), what a person should do as a social person (dont stand by your family if everybody else is against them), what a person should do as a family (go to any extent to protect your family members without giving a second thought), what a person should do as a king (ram rajya)

    @Shankar
i think the whole episode of agni pariksha was much before his return as a king.. it was after the agni pariksha that they took the jet of pushpak and left for ayodhya!

  • @Shankar

Though Bharat did considered him as king always, but still Ram was in "banvaas" where he was not a king!

If he was a king of Ayodhya, wudnt he have collected the army of ayodhya to support him rather than an army of monkeys

  • have been thinking about this more and more...

am reading the ramcharitmanas...i think let me hear what the book says before i speak out...

but yes i think he was trying to be a role model and example for every situation..but still I don't understand WHY and there are lot more questions...
